Zuul? Gateway? Should we get rid of Ribbon? What is going on with Hystrix? If you've ever faced those questions, come and listen to this talk.

In December 2018, Netflix decided to move a number of their popular OSS projects, like Hystrix and Ribbon, into maintenance mode and to make newer, backward -incompatible versions of some others, like Zuul and Archaius. The Spring Cloud team moved some of the corresponding Spring-Cloud-Netflix projects into maintenance mode as well and proposed a newer, more modern Spring Cloud stack that could be used instead. During this talk, we'd like to show how to move over to these newer solutions. We'll discuss possible approaches, show a code demo, and speak about potential issues and solutions.

Ken has worked for a variety of Cloud Service Providers in both the Midwest and Silicon Valley in architecture, engineering, compliance, and security product management roles. An instructor for SEC545: Cloud Security Architecture and Operations and SEC488: Cloud Security Essentials, Ken has also been the co-chair of the 2019 SANS Cloud Security Operations Solutions Forum, the 2019 and 2020 SANS Cloud & DevOps Security Summits.

IT organizations of the future (and present) are faced with managing infrastructure that spans multiple private data centers and multiple public clouds. Emerging tools and operational patterns like kubernetes and microservices are easing the process of deploying applications across multiple environments, but the achilles heel of such efforts remains that most applications require large quantities of state, either in databases, object stores, or file systems. Unlike stateless microservices, state is hard to move.

Ceph is known for providing scale-out file, block, and object storage within a single data center, but it also includes a robust set of multi-cluster federation capabilities. This talk will cover how Ceph's underlying multi-site capabilities complement and enable true portability across cloud footprints--public and private--and how viewing Ceph from a multi-cloud perspective has fundamentally shifted our data services roadmap, especially for Ceph object storage.
